Broadcast of RN Big Ideas from AAG Conference
Conversations on Ageing event coming up
At #AAGConf22 in Adelaide last November, ABC Radio National recorded a panel discussion as part of its Big Ideas series. This was the sixth time RN’s Big Ideas host, Paul Barclay, joined us to host the event. This time, the focus was on what it takes to age well. In 2022, our panellists were Professor Peter Bragge, AAG Glenda Powell Travelling Fellow for 2022, Director at Monash University's Sustainable Development Institute; Ms Dorinda Hafner, author, speaker, TV Chef, artist, marriage celebrant; Professor Ngaire Kerse, AAG Gary Andrews International fellow for 2022, Joyce Cook Chair in Ageing Well at University of Auckland and President of the New Zealand Association of Gerontology; and Dr Mike Rungie, Director of the Global Centre for Modern Ageing. Together, they considered the ingredients of ageing well, how older people can empower themselves, ageism, and what we can learn from ‘blue zones’, where people live longer, better lives. As fellow members of the National Aged Care Alliance, AAG is pleased to help our friends at The Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre promote two new free online Equip Aged Care Learning Packages. These learning packages are aimed at helping nursing, personal care and allied health staff to deliver quality care in contemporary aged care settings. They are also relevant to volunteers, informal carers and others with an interest in aged care. The modules within the learning packages take around 10-minutes to complete and include key care topics such as supporting people living with dementia; aged care system and structure; palliative and end of life care; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island cultural awareness; promoting mental health and wellbeing; wound management and prevention of pressure injuries; oral health and falls prevention. These two new learning packages are part of the Skills Development Program for Aged Care Workers introduced by the Australian Government as a result of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.
